Goodwood Festival of Speed
2018: Honda

At the heart was an interactive motorsport performance space nicknamed ‘The Engine Room.’ It gave visitors the inside track on what makes Honda’s race teams tick: the people, the engineering, the passion and of course, the machines.

Role Within JMW Team

The previous year had seen the 3D role split in rotation between 3 designers, so this year the JMW team were keen to retain consistency and involve one main designer throughout the entire design process. I was responsible for the overall layout and design of the activations, which are listed in the column on the left under ‘Areas of Ownership’.

The design was heavily influenced by race tracks from around the world, creating an experience that reflected the brand’s passion for motorsport from first glance through to the content, activations and experience within. Graphics played a really large part in creating a visual language to share Honda’s authentic racing heritage. Neus and I worked closely together to align graphical requirements with areas on the stand where these stories and statistics could be displayed.

Basic spec and dimension sheets were created for this build as due to the fast pace of this job, the model was shared directly with the build contractor. This meant keeping the model up to date and highlighting any structural / new elements that were being incorporated / removed as the design evolved.

Goodwood Festival of Speed
2017: Honda

With stand staff dressed as laboratory workers in Honda branded white lab-coats, visitors were guided through the activations which directly channel either the excitement or the unique benefits of owning a Honda product.

Areas of Ownership

Ownership of this entire job was shared between 3 3D designers. Due to availability, and working across projects, we worked in rotation to meet deadlines and move the project forward. For that reason I have not called out individual areas because there was overlap of ownership as work was picked up at different stages, by different people.

Role Within JMW Team

The creative team were tasked with designing fun, interactive challenges that highlighted specific product features. Visitors were tasked to pit themselves against the new Civic in recognising traffic signs as fast as the car, and a climbing wall was installed for a more ambitious route to the first level.

The 3D teams joint roll was to develop and align an aesthetic for the stand that was also applicable to each activation. It was important to create a consistent design language to align the stand architecture and challenge lab activations. Keeping the master model up to date was imperative so that it could easily be shared between designers.
